It is not too late. Much of the research was done with young children, but ABA can also help older children and teens; what changes are the goals. Florida Medicaid covers medically necessary ABA for eligible members under 21; from 21, it is available through the iBudget Waiver for those who qualify.
What does the evidence say?
Most participants in the intensive ABA studies the BACB cites started between ages 2 and 8. Even so, the BACB says the effectiveness of ABA is not limited to a certain age, and that the type and hours of therapy should be decided by medical necessity, not age. A 2016 review concluded that ABA can be an effective option across the lifespan.
In Florida, according to WLRN (August 2026), about 45% of Medicaid ABA services go to children ages 6 to 10, and about 20% of children in ABA are 11 to 15.
What does ABA look like for older children and teens?
According to the 2016 review, goals shift with age toward practical skills: work, household tasks, community life and free time. For example:
- Daily living: getting dressed, making a simple snack, using money.
- Safety: crossing the street, not leaving without telling anyone, asking for help.
- Communication and social skills at school and with friends.
- Getting ready for adult life: a job, transportation and free time.
Your child's voice counts
With an older child or teen, their own goals carry more weight. The BACB ethics code asks analysts to involve the person in choosing goals and to seek their assent when they cannot give legal consent. Ask the BCBA how your child will take part in the plan.
What happens at 21?
Florida Medicaid covers ABA for eligible members under 21. From 21, AHCA says behavior analysis is available through the iBudget Waiver for those who qualify; see our page on that program. If your child is already a teen, ask early how that change will work.
In 2026, the Legislature created an ABA task force that is studying, among other topics, care models for different ages and possible limits on how long services can be authorized. Its recommendations are due to the governor and Legislature by December 31, 2026.

Is there an age limit for ABA?
In Florida Medicaid, coverage is for eligible members under 21; after that, for those who qualify, through the iBudget Waiver. The BACB says the type and hours of therapy should be based on medical necessity, not age.
Is ABA for a teen the same as for a young child?
No. With age, goals usually shift to practical skills for home, work and the community, and the young person's own views carry more weight in choosing them.
Is it worth starting if my child is already 12?
It depends on your child's needs, not only on age. A BCBA can assess your child and propose specific goals; ask them to explain in writing what the goals are and how progress will be measured.
General information, not advice for your child. If there is serious self-injury or aggression, call your child's doctor, or 911 in an emergency.
