Autism diagnoses have risen steadily, and every new diagnosis creates demand for evaluation hours, treatment-plan hours and daily therapy hours. Certified clinicians — BCBAs and RBTs — take time to train and license, so in high-demand areas providers fill their caseloads and start queues.
Your real wait also depends on things you can influence: whether your paperwork (diagnosis, referral, insurance) is ready, whether you need a specific schedule or location, and whether you're open to in-home therapy — which often starts sooner than clinic slots.
How to shorten your wait
Get your documents ready now: the diagnostic report, your child's insurance card, and a referral from your pediatrician. Providers can't submit for authorization without them, and assembling them after you reach the top of a list wastes weeks.
Call more than one provider and ask three direct questions: How soon can you actually start? Do you serve my area in-home? Do you take my insurance? A provider with in-home capacity in your neighborhood can often start dramatically sooner than a clinic across the county.
While you wait anywhere, ask about parent training. Coaching sessions teach you strategies you can use at home immediately — so the waiting time still moves your child forward.
